Powellite was founded in 2015 and has been providing high quality evaluations. We enjoy working in close collaboration with our clients, we take time to understand clients’ needs and ensure we deliver high quality reports and presentations. Our team is improvement focused, we aim to continuously improve our skills and share our learning with each other.

We operated as a Community Interest Company (Powellite CIC) until August 2020. During the Covid-19 pandemic we changed our legal status to a limited company allowing Powellite Impact Ltd to provide a more flexible offer to clients.
Our Team

Dr Marit Boot
Director
Marit has been working in research and evaluation for the past 20 years using mixed methods to analyse quantitative, qualitative and economic data. She enjoys leading evaluation projects, working in partnership with clients and directing films. Marit has a PhD in life sciences and previously led monitoring and evaluation projects in the NHS, the Scottish Government and Ipsos. Marit is the Director of Powellite and together with her team she has delivered evaluations for the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Academy, The Churchill Fellowship, the Imperial Health Charity and Natural England. Marit specialises in evaluating the impact of funding programmes and Fellowship programmes. Marit also has extensive experience in the third sector and founded the charity What? Why? Children in Hospital.

Dr Dorothy Szinay
Senior Consultant
Dorothy is a behavioural scientist and chartered psychologist with over 10 years of experience applying behavioural science into digital health solutions, public health campaigns, government policies, and product designs. Dorothy has provided valuable recommendations to optimise engagement and improve organisational initiatives. Dorothy's expertise lies in understanding the complexities of behaviour change and finding innovative ways to enhance its effectiveness. Dorothy supports the delivery of the behaviour science evaluation of the protection of the seabed ReMEDIES project for Natural England. She was the project manager on the evaluation of the Springboard and Starter Grant programmes for the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Dr Kathryn Buchanan
Senior Consultant
Kathryn is a researcher and behavioural scientist with over 15 years of experience in using quantitative and qualitative approaches to deliver high calibre research with actionable and impactful insights. She is an experienced interviewer and facilitator. Her work has included evaluations of interventions and research programmes, gauging public opinion on key societal issues and improving the usability of technological products. She previously worked as a Psychology Lecturer, mentoring early career researchers and completing projects to transform gender equality in academia.

Niall Mackay
Consultant
Niall is an accomplished social and market researcher with over 15 years’ experience. He has worked on projects researching community opinion; social policy; crime; local services; health; media consumption, and politics amongst many others. He has experience in data collecting using both a qualitative & quantitative with methods including in-depth interviews, focus groups, workshops, surveys & desk research. He also has experience in survey design and data analysis. He has engaged with senior stakeholders in the public & third sector, and the general public both face-to-face and remote. Niall has worked on evaluation projects in the third sector including for a veteran’s charity; carers respite charity & rural partnerships.

Linda Kirby
Proofreader
Linda has ten years’ experience as a proofreader and copy editor. Her many clients in the sectors of business, charity and academia keep her busy with impact reports, PhD theses and research papers. Linda believes there is more to proofreading than dotting “i”s and crossing “t”s; she also checks tense, tone and flow and ensures clarity of expression. Linda has helped Powellite to ensure our impact reports are clear and engaging for a range of audiences including funders, senior management and the general public.

Stefan Durkacz
Senior Consultant
Stefan has worked as a social and market researcher for over 20 years. He has extensive experience of quantitative methods including survey design, collection and analysis of data. He is an experienced qualitative researcher familiar with methods including in-depth interviews, focus groups, deliberative workshops, and online forums. He has engaged with vulnerable groups such as older people and those with alcohol or mental health problems, senior stakeholders in the public sector, health professionals, and the general public. Stefan worked on evaluation projects including the Royal Academy of Engineering Policy Fellowships programmes, NRN Seedcorn projects for Natural England and the Innovate at Imperial grant programme for the Imperial Health Charity.

Aakanksha Haran
Senior Consultant
Aakanksha has over 18 years of experience in market research and mixed methodologies. She has worked across sectors including charity, public services, regulation, financial & professional services, media, telecom and technology. She has managed projects for a wide range of clients including the UK National Audit Office, ONS, Ofcom and McMillan Cancer Support. Aakanksha has extensive experience in designing surveys and delivering complex quantitative and qualitative projects. She is passionate about different cultures, has a background in diversity and inclusion research and speaks 5 India languages.

Sarah Frost
Senior consultant
Sarah is an experienced qualitative interviewer, researcher, evaluation specialist and learning facilitator with over 25 years of experience supporting practitioners and managers in both the voluntary and public sectors to evaluate effectively. Sarah supported the delivery of the British Academy Wolfson Fellowship programme evaluation. She is highly experienced in qualitative and participatory evaluation approaches, including action learning sets. She uses her excellent communication skills to conduct in-depth interviews and focus groups. Sarah supports the analysis of qualitative data and the completion of engaging reports.

Janinah Mckenzie Knowland
Consultant
Janinah brings extensive experience in monitoring, evaluation, and learning within the voluntary, community, and social enterprise sector. She is highly skilled at using a participatory approach to ensure effective community engagement. Her work encompasses community-led research, conducting interviews, facilitating focus groups, developing surveys, analysing data and reporting. She has collaborated with youth-focused organisations and health charities to co-design data collection tools to ensure participants’ perspectives informed future services. Janinah’s expertise extends to marginalised communities, including Black and lower socioeconomic groups, where she focused on amplifying beneficiary voices.

Duncan Cowles
Filmmaker
Duncan is a BAFTA Scotland Award winning documentary filmmaker with over 10 years of experience. In collaboration with Marit, he has produced high quality case study videos about the impact of the primary care cancer framework on cancer services, as well as over 20 information videos to prepare children and parents for hospital tests and treatments. Duncan facilitates documentary filmmaking workshops and has produced and directed films for Channel 4, STV and BBC Scotland.

Our business name 'Powellite', refers to a unique mineral with a tetragonal crystal structure which exhibits different reflection colours. Powellite Impact has a focussed approach to evaluation and offers different ways of reflecting complex information.
